A kyusu is a traditional Japanese teapot, most commonly made from clay and designed with a side handle for easy pouring. It is specifically made for brewing Japanese green tea, allowing the tea leaves to expand and release their delicate flavors. The Tokoname clay that is used to make this kyusu contains iron oxide which reacts to the tannin of the tea and reduces astringency which makes the taste of the tea richer and more round. Tokoname, one of Japan's oldest pottery centers, is famous for its iron-rich shade clay, which is unglazed and is known to enhance the flavor and smoothness of Japanese green teas. This kyusu features a built-in ceramic mesh strainer.

A Maru kyusu is a Japanese teapot with a rounded, circular shape. "Maru" meaning round in Japanese.
